Nicola Rullo, known as “o nfamone”, the undisputed leader of the Contini clan, has been arrested in Alicante, Spain, after being on the run since October. The Carabinieri, supported by the Spanish police, apprehended him and he is now in prison in Spain, awaiting extradition to Italy. According to rumors, Rullo will not oppose the request for extradition.

Rullo, the boss of the Contini clan, was released in July last year after years of continuous detention. This surprising turn of events occurred at the end of the trial before the sixth section of the Court of Appeals in Naples. The judges, in accordance with the defense arguments presented by Rullo’s lawyer, Domenico Dello Iacono, granted the boss a substantial reduction in his sentence. Rullo, who had already managed to escape with a ten-year sentence in the first instance, saw his sentence reduced to only two years and eight months. However, Rullo had already served three and a half years in pretrial detention, so the prison doors reopened for him.

An important circumstance to note is that Rullo went from being held under the strict 41-bis regime in Novara prison to being completely free, which became effective a few weeks later. After his release, the boss did not sit idly waiting for further moves from the Prosecutor’s Office. When a four-year sentence was imposed on him at the end of October last year, the 53-year-old “o nfamone” was already gone. The authorities knocked on his door, but he was already nowhere to be found. According to investigative rumors, the Contini boss had decided to leave Naples and move to the lower Caserta area.

Then came his escape to Spain: his run came to an end last night when the Carabinieri, following the movements of some relatives, managed to track him down and handcuff him. In a way, it was a script that had already been seen: Rullo had been arrested at the end of 2017. At the time, already considered one of the leaders of the Contini clan, he was awaiting the verdict of the Court of Appeals after being convicted in the first instance for aggravated extortion. However, before the judges confirmed the conviction and sentenced him to ten years in prison, he had vanished. The Carabinieri had located him in Itri, in the province of Latina, and he had received a reduction in his sentence. He was released in 2019 due to the expiry of his pretrial detention terms, but was arrested again and then released again last summer.
