Donato Capece, SAPPE: “Unacceptable working conditions for prison police”

Salerno. Once again, there have been attacks on prison police personnel at the Salerno Detention Center. This is reported by Tiziana Guacci, regional secretary for Campania of the Autonomous Union of Prison Police: “In the morning around 10:30 am, a detainee was heading to the lawyers’ court when suddenly a group of inmates tried to attack him. The police officer in charge of the section promptly intervened to defend him and was injured. He was immediately taken to the nearby hospital where he was diagnosed with a shoulder contusion with a prognosis of 30 days.” According to Donato Capece, general secretary of SAPPE, “this is the unacceptable daily scenario in which the Prison Police Corps operates. We can’t go on like this anymore: it is a constant and daily drip. The prisons are in the hands of criminals.” The leader of SAPPE accuses the management of prisons by the current Head of the Department of Penitentiary Administration, Giovanni Russo: “His management is a failure: he practically does nothing, lives isolated from “his” men, and we don’t even know what he looks like, as he is clearly allergic to dialogue with the Unions. He doesn’t meet with us and does nothing, when instead he should urgently intervene in the management of foreign detainees, psychiatric patients, institute reorganization, and medium-security reform.”
