Benevento. Luigi Coviello, 49 years old, from Benevento, was sentenced to extortion and acquitted of the charge of mafia association.

He had been taken to prison, but was released ten days later, obtaining early release after serving his sentence. Defended by lawyer Giuseppe Milazzo, Coviello was arrested in January 2020 in an investigation by the Dda (District Anti-Mafia Directorate) on the Sparandeo clan. The investigation concluded in May 2021, with a fast-track trial that also involved nine other people. Coviello was sentenced to 5 years and 4 months for extortion, aggravated by mafia methods, against a businessman. The sentence was later reduced to 4 years and 5 months on appeal. He was acquitted of the charge of association for mafia-type criminal conspiracy.

After spending six months in prison, the man had obtained house arrest and the possibility of going to work. However, on October 19th, when the sentence became final, he was arrested again and transferred to the Capodimonte prison, where he remained until his release.

Now, Luigi Coviello is finally a free man, having completed his sentence. The case has attracted attention due to the involvement of the Sparandeo clan, known for its criminal activities in the area. The investigation by the Dda has shed light on their illegal actions, and this trial is an important step towards dismantling the criminal organization.

The decision to acquit Coviello of the charge of mafia association raises questions about the evidence presented during the trial. It is possible that there were not enough elements to prove his involvement in the criminal organization. However, the conviction for extortion demonstrates that he was indeed involved in illegal activities.

The fight against organized crime remains a priority for law enforcement agencies, and cases like this remind us of the importance of continuing these efforts. The Sparandeo clan is just one example of the criminal networks that operate in our territory, and it is crucial to dismantle them to ensure the safety and well-being of our community.

In conclusion, Luigi Coviello’s release marks the end of his sentence, but it is also a reminder of the ongoing battle against organized crime. The investigation and trial have shed light on the actions of the Sparandeo clan, and this verdict is a step towards justice. It is now up to the authorities to continue their efforts to dismantle criminal organizations and ensure a safer future for our city.
