Gagliano: “Another accident, a sign of poor safety on the S.S. 163”

In recent days, another road accident occurred on the Amalfi Coast, this time on the stretch of road between Praiano and Furore. The worst affected was a motorcyclist who was hit by a car, whose driver fled without providing assistance to the victim who unfortunately may have to undergo leg amputation.

“This is yet another sign of the poor safety conditions on the S.S. 163 Amalfi Coast,” says Salvatore Gagliano, President of the Association for the Protection of Road Accident Victims on the Amalfi Coast. He continues, “There are no cameras at the point of the collision, which makes it impossible to identify the driver who failed to help the motorcyclist. And there are no cameras for kilometers and kilometers, leaving the road in the dark.”

“It is absurd,” Gagliano continues, “that in a destination appreciated worldwide, we often have to rely on privately installed cameras to shed light on accidents, thefts, or robberies that occur in the area. We hope for the intervention of the new Prefect to address with determination the problems that affect the traffic and safety on the Amalfi Coast. Once again, we ask Anas to monitor the road surface, which was paved during the passage of the Giro d’Italia last May and is already deteriorated in the Conca dei Marini stretch where other works have been carried out. Adding new layers of asphalt to the existing ones implies lowering the protective walls, which are now much lower than the norm.”

“We may sound repetitive, but we invite those in charge to cut down the trees that obstruct the view in curves and are often the cause of accidents. Finally, we address the motorcyclists, asking them to moderate their speed when traveling on the S.S. 163, hoping that our continuous appeals will not go unanswered and that, starting from Anas, everyone can act within their competencies to put an end to the numerous dangers that loom on the Amalfi State Road and the other provincial roads leading to Ravello, Scala, and Tramonti.”
