Mennella: “Another act of sabotage: but this won’t stop us”

“These incidents that have been occurring from June until now are systematic acts of sabotage. We are now convinced that those who are perpetrating these actions, which have become targeted and continuous, must believe that this is the only way to stop the actions of our administration. Well, if the ‘directors’ of these actions are convinced of this, they can rest assured: the action conducted by the municipal administration, aimed at putting an end to about a decade of deep stagnation, will continue, if possible with even greater vigor.”

This is how the mayor of Torre del Greco, Luigi Mennella, spoke, who was informed by the deputy mayor and councilor for public works, Michele Polese, about the latest act of vandalism committed by unknown individuals against the city’s public heritage. This time, the construction site opened along the first part of Via Scappi, between the intersection with Via Curtoli and Via Montedoro and the junction connecting to the nearby highway exit, was targeted. Here, since Wednesday, August 30th, interventions have been underway to repair the road surface, which had become dangerous for vehicular traffic, arousing the rightful complaints of the many motorists who daily travel on this road. The municipality intended to start these interventions in the following days in order to completely reopen the road before the start of the school year: “For this reason – emphasizes Deputy Mayor Polese – it was decided that the workers would also work on Saturdays.” But, just as work resumed, there was a bitter surprise: “The workers found the protective barriers torn down and thrown on piles of soil, and in general, the construction site was completely disrupted. Needless to say, before starting work, the workers had to restore the conditions in which they had left the area before leaving.”

“What happened on Via Scappi,” concludes the mayor, “is yet another episode of damage recorded in places where we have tried to restore a sense of civility and legality, in areas where the municipality’s actions have been absent for too many years. I think, just to give a few examples, of the burned bench in the municipal park the day after the cleaning and weeding intervention, as well as the bulky items and mattresses deposited on the streets affected by a comprehensive reorganization. But I repeat, if this is how they intend to stop the actions of our administration, then those who are acting are following the wrong path. On the contrary, all of this, combined with the support of the majority of the citizens, encourages us to continue along the path we have taken. We will file a complaint with the relevant authorities regarding the events that occurred on Via Scappi, in the hope that the surveillance cameras in the area may have captured useful images for the police to identify this crude act of sabotage.”
